Our Badge System

If you search our catalog by Recommended "Favorites," the filtered results include wargames awarded with one of our library's four badges. We use badges to help library visitors discover exceptional games and to highlight systems that excel in a particular area. Because these distinctions are meant to be meaningful, we deliberately award them sparingly. Not every game in the library carries a badge, and that's by design.

Librarian's Choice

Our highest recommendation. The Librarian's Choice badge is reserved for our favorite free wargames—the complete package. These are highly playable systems supported by thoughtful rules, clear presentation, and strong backing from their original authors or publishers. This includes supplemental material, official scenarios, and player aides. These are games we enthusiastically recommend to almost anyone. If you're new to the library and wondering where to begin, this shelf is an excellent place to start.

Hidden Gems

Some truly outstanding games never receive the attention they deserve.

The Hidden Gem badge recognizes lesser-known systems believe deserve a larger audience. These may not dominate internet discussions, but they offer innovative mechanics and accessible gameplay. Half the fun of browsing a library is discovering something unexpected, and these are some of our favorite discoveries.

Beginner Friendly

Everyone enters the hobby somewhere. The Beginner Friendly badge highlights games that are approachable, easy to learn, and especially welcoming to new players. These rules are among our favorite recommendations for introducing friends and family to miniature wargaming. Simple does not mean simplistic! Even veteran players can return to these games again and again.

Solo Mode

The Solo Mode badge identifies games that are confirmed to work well for solo players. Some are designed specifically for solitaire play, while others support cooperative or traditional multiplayer games alongside robust solo options.

Whether you're painting armies at home, exploring a campaign on your own, or simply unable to gather a group, these titles ensure that great games never have to wait for game night.

More Badges?

We had ideas for many more badge varieties but decided to start with these four. Badges are not rankings.

They are recommendations. Every title in the Wargame Library has been collected because we believe it has something worthwhile to offer. The badges simply help point gamers toward games that stand out in a particular way. Like any good library, we hope you'll browse the full extent of the catalog!
