Oi Navarcoi!

Author: Valerio

Publisher: Alkedo Miniatures, 2013

Period: Ancient Naval

Scale: Big Fleet Battle

LIBRARIAN'S SUMMARY

Oi Navarcoi! is an ambitious and distinctive set of ancient naval rules that shifts the player’s perspective from individual ships to the command of entire squadrons. Designed and published by Alkedo Miniatures, the game focuses on the classical era of Mediterranean warfare—the age of triremes, Themistocles, and the great fleet battles of the 5th century BC. Rather than simulating ship-to-ship detail, Oi Navarcoi! emphasizes formation, planning, and command intent. It is a design that aims to capture the feel of ancient naval command, where control was limited and outcomes could turn quickly. Importantly, this is a living ruleset. The author continues to revise and refine the game, and the current version represents a clear evolution over earlier editions, with improved structure, clarity, and overall playability.

WHAT YOU NEED

The game is straightforward to assemble and play. Each squadron is represented by a small number of stands—typically four—with one stand designated as the commander’s element. A few six-sided dice and simple markers for disorder, losses, and morale states round out the requirements. A standard 6' x 4' table is recommended, though larger engagements benefit from additional space to allow for maneuver on the flanks. Because the system operates at the squadron level, players have considerable flexibility in basing and model choice. The publisher, Alkedo Miniatures, offers their own 1/2400 scale metal-cast miniatures for the period. The Alkedo range is available from Irregular Miniatures in the UK. But one of the many reasons Oi Navarcoi found its way onto the shelves of the Wargame Library is because the author generously provides free paper fleets. They are available for download directly in the library, or on the Alkedo website.

HOW IT PLAYS

  1. RESHUFFLE: Players have the option to reshuffle their card deck

  2. FIRE: Optional Fire Phase

  3. COMMAND CHOICE: Movement, Combat, or Pass

  4. STATUS PHASE: Draw cards, remove smoke, check for victory

Oi Navarcoi! is a game about formations and timing. Squadrons operate in distinct classical formations—epi mias (line), epi pollon (depth), epi keras (column), and kyklos (defensive circle)—each with clear advantages and tradeoffs in movement and combat. Ancient naval formations are often mentioned in period sources but rarely utilized in wargaming rules as more than a passing reference. This is a game built around those classical formations.

The turn sequence is clean and consistent: event, movement, melee, and morale. Movement emphasizes formation changes and maneuvering for advantage, while combat is resolved quickly using a unified system of 2d6 tests.

Most key actions—melee resolution, morale checks, maneuver tests, and special tactics like diekplous and periplous—require rolling 2d6 against target numbers, typically needing a 5+ or 6+ to succeed.

This creates a system where:

  • Outcomes are fast and easy to resolve

  • Success rates are generally favorable (often in the 70–80% range before modifiers)

  • Modifiers, positioning, and formation still matter, but within a relatively forgiving probability curve

In practice, this means battles tend to flow smoothly, with formations holding together and executing plans more often than not. At the same time, when multiple tests stack—particularly in melee and morale—the system can produce sudden swings, reflecting the fragile nature of ancient command and control.

A particularly strong feature is the signals system, which allows players to pre-plan maneuvers and execute them more reliably during the battle. This reinforces the central theme of the game: that success is rooted in preparation and coordinated action rather than reactive micromanagement.

Victory is determined by inflicting sufficient losses—typically around half of the opposing squadrons—and then successfully triggering a collapse, meaning that once a battle reaches a tipping point, the end can come quickly.

FINAL Note

Oi Navarcoi! is a game of strong ideas and occasionally uneven execution. On one hand, it offers a genuinely different take on ancient naval warfare by shifting the focus to squadrons and formations. On the other hand, the heavy reliance on repeated high probability 2d6 tests—often with similar target numbers—can make outcomes feel arbitrary. Ultimately, Oi Navarcoi! is best suited for players interested in experimenting with formation-based naval tactics rather than those seeking a finely tuned competitive system. For the Wargame Library, it stands as an intriguing design that explores an underrepresented aspect of ancient warfare.
