2x2 Napoleonics

LIBRARIAN'S SUMMARY

A clever “big battle on a tiny table” system, the title of the rules is inspired by the proposed 2'x2' playing area for 2mm scale miniatures. The rules aim to deliver an entire corps-level Napoleonic engagement in about an hour while emphasizing the challenges period commanders struggled with most: feeding reinforcements into the fight, rallying shattered formations, and keeping attacks moving once musket fire turned infantry lines into immobile smoke clouds. Humble’s standout mechanic is what he calls “the glue of war” — infantry that begins firing becomes pinned, reflecting how difficult it was to stop troops once firefights began. Despite its minimalist footprint and intentionally simple mechanics, 2x2 Napoleonics can produce battles that feel surprisingly narrative and historically plausible, especially once reinforcements begin arriving unpredictably on the flanks and the battlefield starts to evolve in unexpected directions.
